All they do is win win win no matter what
Got treasure on their mind they can never get enough
As DMs, it actually really can get a little tiring having your players win all the time.
All your monsters get wiped. Your BBEG gets blapped in three rounds flat. You might down a player every now and then, but someone casts Revivify and there goes that.
Here are two things to consider trying:
First, try making alternate win conditions for your monsters. Maybe stalling is a victory? Maybe escaping is the goal and not fighting? Perhaps your villain has this particular encounter as a distraction, while the real stuff is going down somewhere else. The simple fact that your players characters’ decide to fight here means the villain has already won.
Second, take stock of your PCs’ strengths. Everyone super armored with ACs of 20+? Don’t throw little minions with rapiers at them, maybe. Early on, sure. But remember your villains … they’re smart (or should be). They won’t keep doing what doesn’t work. They might be like “hmm… maybe we can poison the water supply down here?” for example.
But finally … remember your players are supposed to win. They’re the heros. It shouldn’t be easy. It should be dramatic and difficult. But they really are supposed to win. Our job is to make it feel epic.
