This past weekend I accompanied some of my students to a Model United Nations conference.
It was pretty fun to watch them grow in confidence over the conference’s four days, but one of the most interesting bits was watching them get comfortable with the language.
Before the conference, senior delegates were busy explaining what an unmoderated caucus was and why not to call for a round robin, and the poor freshmen delegates looked completely overwhelmed and nervous.
Once the kiddos got used to things, though, they were throwing the lingo around with the best of ’em, and “Decorum, delegates!” was the go-to phrase when the bus got rowdy on the way home.
There’s something about having rituals and common language that really brings people together, and that’s true for our tables as well.
Think about what phrases and rituals you use at your table. Everything from “previously on your adventures” to start a recap to Matt Mercer’s famous “how do you want to do this?” can bring your table together.
