As
a general rule, I prefer to be in command of my world as a DM and
storyteller. For the most part, I know what happens and why, and what
does and doesn’t fit in the world.
That
being said, it can be useful to occasionally offload some of that
creative demand onto your players, and NPCs are a great place to start.
If
you’re strapped for NPC ideas and want your players to have a better
connection with your world, have each of them tell you an NPC or two
that they know in the world. Maybe a teacher, a rival, a friend or
family member, etc.
It
doesn’t have to be complex, and you don’t have to use or incorporate
the NPC, but you’ll probably find that your players will send you
something that will spark your imagination and give you a lot of ideas
to work with.

P.S.
Many thanks to my friend Nakiya who introduced me to this idea, by the
way. I’ve tried it and gotten some awesome ideas, and I’m sure you will
too. 🙂
