Going unconscious is one of the most stressful situations to be in as PC. You’re sitting there, waiting for your turn and a roll of the dice to determine your fate.
And yet as DMs I’ve noticed that we gloss over that roll so easily.
“Alright Alice, make a death save.”
“Oof that’s one failure.”
And so on.
Why not narrate those death saves and make them more dramatic? Maybe they’re fading in and out, hearing sounds of the battle around them. Maybe they’re not even unconscious at all, just incapacitated, holding a wound closed with one hand while trying to claw their way unsuccessfully toward their comrades with the other.
Yes, the player is unconscious by game rules, but … c’mon. Rule of cool here, peeps. Next session, try describing those death saving throws. Up that narrative tension and see what happens!
