When your players make plans, how often do they go well?
Sometimes it’s because the plan is patently insane. Sometimes, though, it’s because we as DMs find it incredibly hard not to metagame.
I admit to having done this, and I’ve seen other DMs do it too: The players make a plan, one that seems perfect … and yet the BBEG seems to know what’s coming and prepares for it.
Here’s a thought: Let your players surprise you. For a few important planning moments in my recent campaigns, I’d actually leave the table and let the players plan in secrecy. And it was genuinely a lot of fun to discover what they had up their collective sleeves.
Unless the BBEG has scrying or something. In that case screw that plan.
