Sometimes monsters have cool charge moves and nifty mechanics.
Sometimes those mechanics blindside players and their characters, which can sometimes be fun.
But sometimes it’s nice to give your PCs a chance to recognize that something bad’s about to happen.
Next time you throw a dragon at your party, for example, maybe have them make a perception check halfway through the round to notice that the dragon’s throat is starting to glow. It’ll give them a chance, if they succeed, to do what their characters would do if they saw that happening.
Sometimes blindsiding your players with something crazy can be fun, but sometimes it’s fun to see them do a last-second panicked problem solve, too.
Not all the time. Just sometimes.
