I ran the second half of a oneshot (I know…) last night. My players had fun, I had fun, good times all around. One of them asked me afterwards a few “what would have happened?” type questions.
My policy is never to answer those.
It drives my wife nuts (she’s in my regular home group), but I stick to my guns.
In this case, since it’s a published module, the guy can easily go look things up himself, of course. But usually, I like to leave an element of wonder if possible. I’ve found that when I answer after-the-fact “what would have happened?” questions, it takes away a little bit of verisimilitude and enjoyment. It’s like eating the most amazing cookie in the world and being like “WHAT’S IN THAT” and then being secretly disappointed that it’s nothing particularly special.
Just as in the Wizard of Oz: pay no attention to the man behind the screen!
Now get out there and tell a story!
